Painting is a great way to update your home without spending a lot of money. If you’ve never painted before, the project might feel a little daunting. We will walk you through the steps to paint like a pro.
1. Choose the Right Paint
The first step to painting like a pro is choosing the right paint. There are a few things to consider when making your decision. The type of paint you select will depend on the surface you’re painting. For example, if painting drywall, you’ll need to use a different type of paint than if you’re painting wood. You’ll also need to decide on the finish you prefer. Do you want a matte or glossy finish?
Once you’ve decided on the type of paint, it’s time to choose the color. There are many colors and shades to choose from. Hardware stores will often offer cards with sample paint colors. Choose a few shades you’re considering and compare them with the decor of your home. You’ll be able to narrow it down and finally select colors. Purchase high-quality paint for the best finish.
2. Prep the Walls to Paint Like a Pro
After you’ve chosen the paint, it’s time to prepare the walls. Remove the furniture from the room or move it to the center of the space and cover it with protective plastic. This includes any paintings or photographs on the walls. Once the room is empty, wash the walls with mild soap and water. This will remove dirt or dust on the surface.
After you’ve cleaned the walls, use a putty knife to fill holes and cracks. Then, sand the areas until they are smooth. Once the walls are prepped, you’re ready to start painting.
3. Mask Trim and Outlets
Before painting, apply masking tape to cover the trim and outlets to prevent paint splatter on them. Place masking tape along the length of the baseboard trim and crown molding. Remove outlet and light switch covers. If they cannot be removed, apply masking tape to protect them as well.
4. Take Time to Paint Like a Pro
Begin by painting the edges of the room first, including the area around the doorframes and windows. Use a small paintbrush for these spaces. Next, apply paint to the rest of the walls. Use a roller to start at the top of the wall and work your way down. Apply the paint in even strokes in a “W” shape to prevent streaks and lines.
5. Let the Paint Dry
After you’ve finished painting allow an hour for the first coat to dry before applying the second. To facilitate drying, open windows and use fans in the space. Once the paint is dry, remove the tape from the trim and outlets, and move your furniture back into the room
