Chemicals in your home can cause health problems. Read on to learn if you are unknowingly exposing your family to harmful chemicals.

Many of the products that we use in our homes contain toxic chemicals. Here are 8 chemicals in your home that can affect your health.

#1 Chemicals in Your Home from Dry Cleaning

Dry cleaning uses a volatile organic compound called Perchloroethylene, which you can smell on freshly dry-cleaned items. It can cause headaches and dizziness in some people and nasal and eye irritations in others. Anything that has been dry-cleaned should be aired out outside before bringing it indoors.

#2 Look for BPA-Free Plastic

Bisphenol A (BPA) is commonly used in the production of plastic water bottles and epoxy resins used in canned food and bottle tops. Luckily, you can find water bottles and cans that are labeled BPA-free. Bisphenol A has been linked to blood pressure issues and brain development problems in children and fetuses.

#3 Chemicals in Your Home from Children’s Toys

Most U.S. toy manufacturers know about the dangers of using lead in their products. Unfortunately, some companies in other countries may not be so diligent. Lead poisoning has been linked to cognitive problems, weight loss, and seizures in children.

#4 Formaldehyde May Already be in Your Home

Formaldehyde is used in the manufacturing process for plywood and particle board which is used to make furniture. Formaldehyde can cause some people to suffer from itchy eyes or nasal and throat irritations. In extreme cases, research has shown that overexposure can lead to an increased risk of throat and nose cancers.

#5 Your Cleaning Supplies Could Be Adding to Chemicals in Your Home

Some all-purpose cleaning products contain 2-Butoxyethanol, a chemical that can cause breathing issues and nausea if you are exposed to it for too long. It’s also being studied for possible links to birth defects and fertility issues.

Chemicals in your home, namely benzene, can also be found in heavy-duty, powdered cleansers. Some people can develop issues with their red blood cell counts and bone marrow density from too much exposure to benzene.

Look for non-toxic cleaning products, or make your own using essential oils and natural ingredients.

#6 You Might be Bringing Chemicals Inside on Your Shoes

Your shoes pick up a lot of dirt, allergens, and other harmful particles including pesticides. All of that gets tracked back into your home. Overexposure to pesticides has been linked to muscular issues, headaches, and shortness of breath. Put mats on either side of your exterior doors to wipe your feet and clean them often.

#7 There Could be Chemicals in Your Flooring

Some vinyl floor coverings contain phthalates, which have been documented as both a cancer-causing chemical and the cause of infertility in some men. The carpet, padding, and glue in newly installed carpeting all contain harmful chemicals. It’s always best to keep windows open during carpet installation and allow plenty of ventilation for a few days.

#8 Your Plastic Shower Curtain Liners can Make You Sick

Shower curtain liners made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) emit volatile organic compounds or VOCs. Choose fabric liners instead and launder them regularly to prevent mold and mildew growth.
