If you or a member of your household suffers from allergies, there is a good chance that dust, pet dander, pollen, and mold trigger a reaction. While you may be unable to prevent allergies outdoors, a few measures can help you allergy-proof your home.

How to Allergy-Proof Your Home

You can take steps to reduce allergens in your home, boosting comfort for you and your loved ones. Here are a few tips.

1. Dust and Vacuum Regularly

There are allergens in every home like pet dander on the furniture, mold on the carpet, and dust on the ceiling fans. Regular cleaning will reduce allergens in the living spaces. Dust and vacuum at least weekly. If you suffer from allergies, wear a mask while dusting, vacuuming, and sweeping.

2. Clean or Replace Air Filters

HVAC filters capture dust, dirt, and debris circulating through the air in your home. However, if not replaced regularly, they become dirty and clogged. Dirty filters result in irritants like pet dander, dust mites, pollen, and other allergens circulated throughout the home.

3. Manage Humidity to Allergy-Proof Your Home

In addition to cleaning or replacing HVAC filters, keep the humidity in your home under control. Humidity levels lower than 50 percent are less likely to allow mold to thrive.

Manage the moisture indoors with dehumidifiers strategically placed throughout the home. Use a dehumidifier in the basement, kitchen, and bathroom, where it will remove moisture from the air.

4. Wash Linens Regularly

Allergens can accumulate on your bedding. To keep the linens clean and allergy-free, wash them in hot water and dry using the hottest dryer setting.

Add a mattress cover and pillow covers that block allergens. Keep pets off your bed. Breathing in pet dander at night can cause you to wake up with allergy symptoms.

5. Limit the Pollen that Enters the Home

To reduce the number of allergens that enter your home, keep the windows closed on high-pollen days. A cool breeze may sound nice, but that breeze can blow in pollen from outside, triggering your allergies.

Remove your shoes as soon as you arrive home. If the pollen count is exceptionally high, take a shower immediately upon coming indoors.

Allergy-proofing your home can take time, but the process will help reduce your allergy symptoms.
