Sometimes, it can be challenging to figure out the source of the weird smell. Whether it’s the smell of rotten eggs, dirty laundry, pets, or wet socks, many everyday activities can cause your home to have an unpleasant odor. If you think your home smells funny, check the following areas to help you identify the source of the scent.

If Your Home Smells Funny, Check the Garbage Disposal

It’s easy for people to neglect their garbage disposal when cleaning the kitchen. However, bacteria can live inside your garbage disposal due to leftover food particles and grow over time. It’s crucial to clean your disposal to keep it from smelling bad.

To properly clean it, put lemon slices, ice cubes, one teaspoon of bleach, and one tablespoon of baking soda into your garbage disposal. Afterward, add more ice cubes and run the disposal for a few minutes. Once you turn it off, use cold water to rinse it thoroughly. The lemon slices eliminate odor, the bleach kills bacteria, and the ice cubes loosen food particles.

Front-Load Washer

Front-load washers are energy-efficient and use less water than top-load washers. Unfortunately, these washing machines are notorious for harboring mold and mildew, which can cause severe respiratory problems and allergic reactions in many people. Leaving the front-load washer door open between loads helps dry out the drum and prevent mold.

The Home Smells Funny Because of Plumbing Problems

If your home smells funny, check your drains. The smell may point to a clogged drain or broken sewer pipe. It may also mean that you have a dried-out P-trap if the drain has not been used. You can control this issue by periodically running water down your drains to prevent the P-trap from drying up. If this doesn’t work, call a professional plumber to deal with the issue.

Rotten Egg Smell: Check for Gas Leaks

The smell of rotten eggs or sulfur in your home could mean you’re dealing with a severe gas leak. Natural gas is typically odorless, so chemical companies add a sulfuric odor to make it easily detectable.  If you smell rotten eggs, leave the house as fast as possible and call a gas company. Avoid using the landline in your home or turning on or off any appliances, as it could spark a fire or an explosion.

If your home smells funny, check out the four problem areas above. Getting rid of the foul smell will make your space more comfortable and potentially safer.
